Artist/author Barbara McClintock takes us back to Victorian times in this lovingly illustrated story about Charlotte, a tomboy of six or seven (despite her prim Kate Greenaway costuming). When Charlotte receives an elegantly dressed doll from Aunt Edme, she's sure she doesn't want this fragile creature -"all linen and lace and delicate silk ribbons." How this lady-like doll, soon to be named Dahlia, learns to dig in dirt, climb trees and become a best friend to Charlotte makes for a satisfying tale of make-believe. Though McClintock's book is oversize, she achieves the same delicacy and charm in her ink and watercolor illustrations as Greenaway does in her much smaller-format books. Dahlia is a soufflé of a picture book and one that many young listeners - more girls than boys - will thoroughly enjoy.
