A viruoso use of colored-pencil drawings (they cover two thirds of every double spread) makes this appealing work a rich feast for the eyes. Couple this with the author/illustrator’s uncanny gift for capturing the living essence of various animals – from cats and kittens to cock and hens, cows and calves, family dog and lost lamb – and you have the perfect bucolic setting for Kim Lewis’s simple, well-told tale. The young heroine, perhaps 5 or 6, befriends a little lost lamb brought into the house by her farmer father. She keeps it warm, feeds it with a baby’s bottle and plays with it until the sheep mother arrives to claim her wayward offspring. It is a genuinely sweet, comforting story whose pictures speak louder than the words. It is a book whose pages will be turned again and again.
