This is a special book that quietly -- but ever so effectively -- confronts a sorry truth of the not-so-distant American past: the South's prevailing Jim Crow laws that relegated Black Americans to the back seats of buses and to separate facilities in most public places. But it would be a disservice to author McKissack's low-key text and artist Pinkney's evocative 1950s-style watercolors to suggest that their collaboration is a polemical tract about race, justice or equality. It is simply a story about its heroine Tricia Ann's first trip downtown by herself. We may wonder what "Someplace Special" will turn out to be, but it is the heroine's adventures getting there that keep us eagerly listening and looking. We rejoice in discovering that her destination is the public library where, chiseled in stone across its entrance, are the words PUBLIC LIBRARY: ALL ARE WELCOME. A subtle and lovely work.
