Lucky Dog with Brandon McMillan

Lucky Dog with Brandon McMillan

Spring 2019 Television
Ages: 13 - 16 yrs.
Rating: TV G

Dog-trainer Brandon McMillan has dedicated his life to being a voice for shelter dogs, and this half-hour documentary-style program spotlights his mission of "making sure these amazing animals find a purpose, a family, and a place to call home."

Each episode follows the tale of a dog who must overcome challenges before being placed in a new home, and McMillan works with the animals at his Lucky Dog Ranch. In one episode, a shelter dog named Ginger has a great personality but has had no prior behavioral training. McMillan rescues her and teaches her basic commands and also breaks her exuberant bad habits of jumping on people and dashing out of doors the instant they open. He also conducts a home visit with a potential family and while he's there, he notes the son has a hover board. He heads back to the Lucky Dog Ranch and incorporates a hover board into Ginger's training to ensure she and the family son can move together safely. He also acclimates Ginger to cats, because the prospective family also loves felines.

Because the program is aimed at young viewers, stories aren't overly complex. It's about human interest, with an interesting exploration of dog behavioral training mixed in. Of course, the training leads up to the emotional big moment when the rescue dog is presented to, and bonds with, its new family.
