Little Whale
Fall 2018 Picture BooksBorn in warm southern seas, Little Whale must swim with his/her mother Gray Whale to the rich feeding grounds in the cold north, thousands of miles away. Other members of their pod have already completed their journey and await them. Gray Whale tells Little Whale that they are going "home." The long migration is peppered with new experiences and danger. Little Whale is constantly asking Gray Whale if they are home yet. Finally, Gray Whale tells her exhausted little one that they are "home."
The color palette is a stunning choice; the spare text underscores the lonely, but clearly bonding voyage. With the softest of charcoal outlines and lovely shades of gray-blue, author/illustrator Jo Weaver depicts the difficult journey of a mother whale and her child on their migration, believed to be the longest in the animal kingdom.
