Bedtime Stories - read & tell

Spring 2018 Mobile Apps
Ages: 3 - 9 yrs.
Platform: iPhone/iPod Touch

The Bedtime Stories Read and Tell app by Little Light Studios, features content for children aged two through nine years, presents a variety of Story Worlds, collections of five, short, thematically-related stories, that parents can read to their children. Also, available are Story Points for each story; these short bullet points allow parents to review the story before putting down the device and retelling it to their children. There are even story-telling tips in the app to help parents engage their children in the stories.

The stories themselves have age appropriate themes and appealing characters. For example, the "My Sister the Werewolf" Story World by Elizabeth Ditty tells the tale of five-year-old Freddie as he tries to understand why his parents' behavior changes so drastically when his new baby sister comes home. He concludes that his baby sister who howls constantly, stays up all night, and sleeps the day away in a "cage," is a werewolf. The story shows the disappointment and confusion young children experience with the birth of a new sibling. But, it resolves with a sweet bonding experience between Freddie and his new sister. In this sense, the story can serve as a conversation starter to get children to express and address their emotions.

In addition to the pre-written stories, the app features a Story Builder function, a set of easy-to-follow prompts that guide parents and children through the process of creating their own original stories. This is our family's favorite part of the app. Not only do children delight in creating and retelling the stories, but they also learn story components, structure, and sequencing without even realizing that they are picking up critical pre-reading, reading, and writing skills.
