LeapFrog Academy

Fall 2017 Games
Ages: 3 - 6 yrs.
Price: $7.99

The latest edition to LeapFrog's game based portfolio is LeapFrog Academy, designed for children aged three through six years. The academic activities can be played not only on LeapFrog Epicâ„¢ and Epicâ„¢ Academy Edition tablets, but also on iPad and Android tablets, iPhones, and Android phones and Apple or Windows computers. Once parents have created a profile (or up to five) for their child, the Academy presents a series of learning adventures, short, self-contained lessons that children can complete in one sitting with very little difficulty. Each of the lessons has a variety of quick games and puzzles that earn children marbles. Children collect the marbles to earn items for their chosen collection; we chose to start a virtual fossil collection and delighted in collecting marbles to get more bones for the dinosaur skeleton. This type of positive reinforcement helps children stay motivated.

The topics covered in these lessons varies, but include reading, writing, math, and science; they also focus on social-emotional skills as well. In one lesson alone, my son completed an online jigsaw puzzle, learned about different types of animal teeth, was introduced to the countries of Asia, and worked with number values in a Fruit-Ninja-style game. The games were short, self-contained, and engaging, but they also moved quickly enough to keep him interested. There are over 1000 games, ebooks, and activities in the app and they can even be downloaded and taken on the go (no need to stay tethered to that wi-fi signal) adding to the play and learning values.

No LeapFrog product would be complete without a Parent Dashboard, through which parents can track a child's progress and see where they are doing well and where they might need extra support. A free, three-month trial is available via the LeapFrog website; additional subscriptions are billed at $7.99 a month.
