I Think I Can
Spring 2017 MusicHailing from the tiny town of Callahan, Florida, "Mrs. Kate" Carpenter travels throughout the southeast performing her original folk music and stories for children and families. I Think I Can promotes confidence, healthy lifestyle and awareness of nature. In "Let's Exercise," Mrs. Kate sings "C'mon. Work it out! Push, push, push. Limit your screen time, get off your tush." Elsewhere, there is the wistful tale of "Forgetful Ned," the clockwork rhythm of "Time is A Gift," and the big word flaunting, nature loving "Metamorphosis - The Butterfly Song." A trio of songs explores kids' relationships with their parents, including "When Mama Says No," "Mothers of Messy Kids Unite," and the delightful "Whine, Whine, Whine." A rather interesting cautionary song titled "Someday You're Gonna Be" reminds listeners not to do foolish things in their youth, because they won't be young forever. The album closes with "No Two Alike," a song that celebrates how everyone is unique and a song of activism called "Be a Doer." The musical arrangements are uncluttered, with acoustic guitars, piano and fiddles, augmented by a very tuneful kid chorus. Carpenter exudes a warm, friendly, grandmotherly presence; her sweet tenor, acoustic guitar strumming, and simple lyrics makes one feel as if they are having a visit with a longtime dear friend. A solid choice for parents and teachers of young listeners.
