Animated Epics: Beowulf

Spring 2001 Television
Ages: 12 - 18 yrs.
Producer: HBO
Network: HBO
Review:
Who needs cliff notes when you have such entertaining and masterfully produced literary classics such as these? HBO's Emmy Award winning series stands above the rest for good reason. Stellar production values combined with some of the most imaginative story telling through animation and claymation is guaranteed to bring even the most confounding stories to life. Granted, there's no substitute for reading books, but this series whets viewers' appetites and provides a wonderful jumping board for those struggling with required reading lists. The stories presented here are remarkably accurate and although not always pretty to look at, are done with a sophistication and sensitivity worthy of the subject matter. The show also attracts impressive voice talent such as Derek Jacobi and Joseph Fiennes and covers classics from the Canterbury Tales to Beowulf with the guidance of scholars from Cambridge.
