DiscoveryBox, the third in Bayard's series of progressively-leveled books and magazines, is a 52-page magazine written for children aged nine through twelve years. Each magazine includes articles and activities focused on a particular theme such as the Olympics in ancient Greece, the history of aviation, Australia, the palace of Versailles, and so forth. Each issue is divided into four primary sections: Zoom In, Investigate, Pics and Facts, and Wildlife and include a variety of fun facts, cartoons, games, and mini-articles interspersed throughout their pages. The text is enhanced by attractive photographs and entertaining illustrations and comics. Zoom In serves as an introduction to the issue's particular theme; it might be a labeled diagram of an ancient city, a description of daily life by a reader from another country, or a basic introduction to key terms and concepts. Readers then follow other young people as they explore the topic hands-on; one article describes a boy's two-day stay on an aircraft carrier, while another describes a girl training with an Olympic fencer. Reading about someone their own age allows children to identify better with the material. Pics and Facts explains more about the topic by embedding facts and information into entertaining, comic-book-style stories. The Wildlife section focuses on a particular animal and provides information on its diet, habitat, and habits. The magazine also has a Pet Care section where readers can learn about their pets (e.g., how do cats always land on their feet) and how to care for them (e.g., checking pets for ticks). And, there is typically a science experiment such as comparing the speed of sound to the speed of light, building and testing paper airplanes, or making paper jump like kangaroos. The magazine concludes with a back cover quiz to assess comprehension and open discussions. Readers, caregivers, and educators can also visit the DiscoveryBox website for enrichment materials and activities.
