Brooklyn based, purple-haired Lucy Kalantari plays roaring 20?s style jazz, with a fine voice that recalls both Billie Holiday and the Andrew Sisters. Big Things is her second album of original children's music compositions, and opens with the celebratory "Fantastic," before moving onto the vegetable loving "Our Garden." Other favorites includes the slinky and bouncy song "Balloon," and the counting/scale singing song "My Neighbor," featuring noted opera singer Adelmo Guidarelli. Her first-rate band employs Hot Club-style jazz in her cover of Walter Doyle's 1930 spooky tale of "Mysterious Mose."

On the lighter side, "Close The Loop" is a harmonious recycling lesson, "Lovely," a tuneful compliment, is short and sweet. Cellist Jessica McWilliams adds atmosphere to the playfully dramatic "It's Halloween." Self-esteem and personal inspiration dominate the swinging "Big Things," augmented by Gene Krupa-style drums and the lead trumpet playing of special guest David Longoria. A new "Birthday" song is always a welcomed addition, and this one is performed in a syncopated polka style. The album concludes with two tributes to Kalantari's son; "Love You Always," and the charming and simple acapella of "Song for My Son."

Aside from being a masterfully expressive singer, Kalantari is also an adept ukulele player. Clarinetist Linus Wyrsch, Larry Cook on upright bass and drummer Rich Kulsar act as her backing band on this fine album of traditional-style jazz.
