Lux Blox are the newest addition to the world of building sets. These flat, interlocking plus signs are designed for children aged six through sixteen, and the adults who play with them. The sets are available in three sizes small (88 pieces) medium (200 pieces) and large (450 pieces) and range in price from $29.99 - $119.99. Printed instructions are not included - and for a very good reason. The creators of these unique blocks have designed the Lux experience for open-ended free construction by putting the blocks together without a script or set of instructions.

We began by watching a variety of Vimeo and YouTube videos; these gave us guidance on how to create the basic structures (e.g., sphere, cube, triangular prism, etc.) required for more advanced designs. After they had mastered the basic structural components, they moved on to create their own structures. Some videos have simplified explanations of important concepts such as form, structure, corrugation, modularity, and so forth.

Our five-year old constructed several simple dragons, which he then wove into an imaginative story of knights and princesses. Thus, his experience combined experimentation in structural composition with detailed imaginative play. Our eleven year old preferred initially to create suggestions pictured on the product's packaging (with the assistance of the tutorial videos on YouTube) such as the "car" with its two spherical wheels. She then moved onto building her own creations such as a hot air balloon and a castle.

Not only are the Lux Blox playfully habit forming, they can be used to explore a wide variety of forms and shapes such as tetrahedrons, hexahedrons, capillarions (mixtures of structure and machine), and a variety of carbon-based structures. This is a fantastic, hands-on way to teach children about geometry and architecture while honing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving, analytical thinking, and spatial awareness - and the creativity these lessons inspire.
