ParkPals: Kindess Rules

Spring 2016 Mobile Apps
Ages: 7 - 9 yrs.
Platform: iPad

Park Pals: Kindness Rules, an app created by Community for Children for players aged seven to nine years, focuses on teaching children how to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind members of society. Children start by designing a "critter" and selecting a name for it. They are then told that they will be teaching their critter to be "awesome and kind" at Creature Camp.

Children progress through a series of kindness-themed games. In Fair and Square, players dish out a shapes of various points to their critter friends but must make sure that all their friends get equal shares. This activity not only teaches fairness and sharing but also involves basic addition and value-comparison skills. In Responsibility Response, players are presented with a variety of scenarios and must decide whether the characters' actions are responsible or not. Safety Hop is a virtual board game in which players race around the track while making decisions to keep themselves and their friends safe (e.g., pay attention when crossing the street). In the Respect Detector, players look at pictures and decide what respectful behavior is, and what it is not. Finally, in the Park, players move all around and talk to critters to increase the Park's happiness meter. In these interactions, they encourage their friends to take turns, intercede to stop bullying, and so forth.

This free app has no in-app purchases or third-party advertising. Although the activities are closed-ended and will become repetitive after continued play, Park Pals is a wholesome, educational, and entertaining app that teaches children respect, responsibility, and kindness.
