HALO Awards

Spring 2016 Television
Ages: 6 - 12 yrs.
Producer: Nickelodeon
Rating: TV G

Nickelodeon's 2015 HALO Awards show is part concert, part party, and all about shining the spotlight on teens who take the time to affect positive change. Created by celebrity Nick Cannon, the HALO Award stands for "Helping And Leading Others" and young honorees are celebrated for their civic engagement, social responsibility, and community service, each receiving scholarship money as part of their recognition.

The hour-long 2015 awards program is hosted by Nick Cannon and high-energy performances kicked off with a medley by singer Flo Rida, accompanied by a troupe of background dancers and hover-boarders. Other performances include DNCE with Joe Jonas singing Cake by the Ocean, WALK THE MOON singing Shut Up and Dance with Me, and Tori Kelly singing Should've Been Us, all performing to a cheering crowd of young people at Pier 36 in New York City.

Young celebs from popular Nickelodeon channel programs, including Isabela Moner, Rahart Adams, Brec Bassinger and Coy Stewart, participated in silly stunts in order to raise money for charity. Segments highlighted the HALO honorees and worthy community initiatives, including a kick-off of the new HALO Effect, an initiative to recognize a teen champion each month. The first was a young woman who started a non-profit that provides beds for kids who don't have them.

Arguably the most screech-worthy moment of the night was when Justin Bieber became the first celebrity to be inducted into the HALO Hall of Fame for his work with charities Make-A-Wish and Pencils of Promise. Bieber began his acceptance speech asking for a moment of silence to recognize those affected by violence in the world, then continued by asking his fans to each play a part in making the world a better place.

For its inspiring teen profiles, exuberant musical performances, and celebration of teens' ability to make a difference, the 2015 HALO Awards show is an uplifting hour of viewing for the whole family that just might motivate viewers - young and old alike -- to think about how they can improve their own corner of the world. In the words of host Nick Cannon, "It doesn't matter how you help, as long as you help."
