Bubble Guppies
Spring 2016 TelevisionBubble Guppies, a CGI-animated half-hour program for preschoolers, follows the adventures of young mermaids and mermen in the underwater world of Bubbletucky. They explore their watery world and attend school together, a story device that introduces viewers to age-appropriate science, math and literacy concepts as well as character education through simple plot points and original songs.
In one episode titled "The Running of the Bullfrogs," the Bubble Guppies learn about the life cycle and habits of frogs. In an episode titled "Fruit Camp," the gang learns about trying new foods and adding nutritious choices to their daily diet. And in "Super Guppies!" Gil takes on the superhero persona of Bubble Boy and his pal Molly becomes Guppy Girl, a dynamic duo charged with battling a villain assaulting the city with stinky smells. Parents of a certain age, take note: this episode includes the voice talents of none other than Ozzy Osbourne playing a character called Sid Fishy. (Yes, that character's name is a riff on punk rocker Sid Vicious, and yes, Ozzy Osbourne is a pioneer of the heavy metal genre but don't think about any of that too hard and you'll be charmed by Osbourne's willingness to throw himself into this charmingly silly role.)
Preschool television offers many programs starring humanized animals but Bubble Guppies has made great strides in trying to stand out with skilled storytelling, educational offerings clever art direction and distinct character voices - all delivered in a light-hearted and visually appealing format.
