I (Don't) Like Snakes
Fall 2015 Picture BooksI (Don't) Like Snakes is a clever combination of both fiction and fact. In the story, a girl from a reptile-loving family "really, really, REALLY" doesn't like snakes. She's repulsed by how they slither and she can't stand their scaly skin. But as she learns more about these important creatures, she comes to appreciate them. The book is packed with detailed information about snake anatomy, from their forked tongues to the smell-sensing Jacobsen's organ and the differences in the pupils of various species. Luciano Luzano's mixed-media illustrations feature two distinct looks: the storyline and human characters are rendered in a cheerful, vintage style reminiscent of 1960s-70s children's books, while the snakes are depicted in realistic detail. While the picture book format seems to skew young, the science and scientific vocabulary will appeal to older readers. This is a good choice for either home or the classroom.
