Charlie Bumpers usually looks forward to Thanksgiving, but this year he has some serious qualms. He's pretty excited that his uncle Ron will be coming to stay, and that his favorite superhero, Buck Meson, will be having a special on TV. But his younger cousin Chip is also coming to stay … and Charlie knows that means trouble. His fears turn out to be well warranted; from the minute Chip walks in the door, he begins to cause havoc. He sneaks food and candy meant for the company, jumps on Charlie's bed, tries to monopolize the rocket Uncle Ron brings as a treat for the kids, and worst of all, insists on interrupting Charlie during his long-awaited Buck Meson special. Even Charlie's brother and sister, usually the banes of his existence, notice what a hard time he's having. The Bumpers children need to hatch a plan to save Charlie from Chip!

This middle-grade family novel features an engaging, lovable narrator. Charlie Bumpers may act like a jerk to his brother and sister at first, but the reader can't help feeling for him as he tries to handle Chip's obnoxious incursions with grace and hospitality. The secondary characters are well drawn, especially Charlie's younger sister, who is just learning to read and who makes a point of spelling everything she can. The family holiday disaster story marches toward a fairly predictable warm ending, but the journey is truly enjoyable.
