Kids First Physics Lab
Fall 2015 ToysThe Kids First Physics Lab is a 142-piece beginner physics kit that children use to conduct twenty-two well-explained experiments. It demonstrates and explains basic physics concepts including, but not limited to weight, types of energy, force, levers, and pulleys.
The manual is an excellent resource not only for its well-illustrated, simple-to-understand experiment instructions, but for the science content as well. The manual includes a wide variety of pictures and information that connect the experiment to real-life; for example, one of the first experiments models a tightrope walker. Through the experiment and the informative instructions, children are introduced to key physics concepts such as gravity and opposing force. Another experiment has children construct a force meter that they use to measure and compare the weights of different objects. And, the force meter is used in later experiments- again, demonstrating real-life applications of their creations.
Also of note: the manual rates each experiment's difficulty level so that parents can help their children choose the experiments that are going to be challenging enough to engage but appropriate enough to avoid frustration and disappointment. The sense of accomplishment and confidence that children gain from these successes is a critical foundation for future learning.
