Review:

You won't find many baby-centric CDs as unusual and creative as this one. Clearly inspired by the well-observed joys and challenges of motherhood, and accompanied by a sterling cadre of musicians, singer/songwriter Vered plays with melody, rhythm and lyrics in unexpected, delightful, and at times, deeply moving ways. (The closest comparison that comes to mind is Jessica Harper and her stunning children's albums, "40 Winks" and "Hey, Picasso" among them). Each song is crafted around a baby's and/or a parent's point of view. "Gotta Go" captures perfectly how a little rug scooter explores his/her expanding world: "…gotta look, gotta look…gotta look everywhere…what's that over there? Gotta go, gotta have it, gotta hold it, gotta put it in my mouth, because there's no better way to figure out what it's about." Vered has her own delightful take on play songs ("Galloping Horse," "Peekaboo"), and any exhausted, frazzled parent can relate to Vered's heartfelt "All I Want" (" ... is to sleep 7 hours") or to the wistful "Something Other Than a Mom": "These days I forget to look into a mirror, but if a glass catches me I see something other than a mom…." Even something as everyday as changing a baby's clothes ("Changing") becomes something more, a reflection of the depth of a mother's love and the recognition that both mom and baby are changing and growing together. Wow.
