Breathe In: Children's Songs for Mindfulness and Awareness
Fall 2015 MusicNew York-based children's musician Lianne Bassin is a singer-songwriter, with a background as an early childhood teacher, and yoga instructor. Bassin cultivates awareness and appreciation of self and others in her 21-song debut collection. Bassin sings in a high, sometimes little girlish voice, that mostly serves the songs well. Each tune comes with a "mindful activity," found in the accompanying, fully annotated booklet. Songs such as "Together We Are Beautiful," "Hugging Words," "Love Inside My Heart," and "What Do I Feel?" all express important aspects of growing up whole, and self-assured. Musical styles mostly remain in the folk and folk-pop genre, while a few tunes, like "Trees," have some nice non-traditional use of instruments and voices. Some great backing musicians join Bassin throughout, but her lead vocals and expressive ukulele are always at the center. The songs clearly and pleasantly convey much needed messages, without appearing preachy or obvious. Clocking in at over 55 minutes, this may be best enjoyed, and absorbed, in several shorter sessions.
