Review:

In her exceptional non-fiction picture book, author Jen Bryant brings to life Peter Mark Roget, creator of "Roget's Thesaurus," the universally used reference book in print since its original publication in 1852. With graceful simplicity, Bryant moves from Roget's childhood as a fatherless boy finding solace in books and words, while embarking on what would become a lifetime of list-making, to the adult Roget's life as teacher, medical doctor, husband and father, and, finally, as best-selling author Roget, whose word-rich "treasure house"-the Greek meaning of "thesaurus"-captivated the public from its first printing. Illustrator Melissa Sweet offers layers of fascinating detail to pore over, visualizing Roget's passion for "the right word" through collage, watercolor and mixed media. Bryant has shaped a number of picture books around an eclectic group of real-life subjects. Her other collaborations with Sweet include "A Splash of Red" (about American folk artist Horace Pippin) and "A River of Words" (about poet William Carlos Williams).
