Nick Jr App

Nick Jr App

Fall 2015 Mobile Apps
Ages: 2 - 6 yrs.
Developer: Nickelodeon
Platform: iPad
>p>Parents who are fond of Nick Jr.'s preschool television programming will be delighted with the Nick Jr. app from Nickelodeon. The app, which features both live streaming TV as well as full episodes on demand of the station's more than two dozen current shows, provides its content free to any subscribers of cable or satellite TV service. As a small bonus, the app also features pop-up alphabet letters that (when selected) show a very brief animation related to the letter (e.g., N for Noodles shows a bowl of ramen disappearing under a pair of chopsticks) usually featuring characters from one of the shows.

The Nick Jr. programs cover a wide range of entertaining and generally educational content, including Dora and Friends, Wonder Pets, Max and Ruby, and more. Each show features six complete episodes as well as several shorter clips. The full episode streaming in the app over high-speed home internet was consistently very smooth; the live TV was occasionally slightly lagged.

Parents should be aware that the live TV streaming includes the same commercial content that their children would encounter on the usual broadcast medium (though the live TV is disabled during the non-preschool hours on the Nick Jr. station). There are no time limits on the app (unless one is using an Apple Watch), so parents concerned about excessive screen time -- something that can happen far more easily with a mobile device than on the family television - should be prepared to set alternative time limits.
