David Wiesner’s Spot

Fall 2015 Mobile Apps
Ages: 6 - 8 yrs.
Download Price: $4.99
Platform: iPad

When you first open David Wiesner's Spot, nothing appears except for the title and a wandering ladybug who refuses to stay put as the O in the word "SPOT." But a flashing circle alerts you that there is more than meets the eye: pinch-zoom into the spot on the ladybug and you find yourself in a new world. Every world has something (or many things) spotted in it -- a chocolate chip cookie, a pixelated newspaper photo, splotches of ink on a handwritten sign -- and focusing on the spot takes you somewhere new; through a world of tiny creatures under a chair, a robot town, a city of cats, a ladybug picnic, a ski slope, an underwater tourist route. Scenes link back on themselves endlessly in a mesmerizing flow; readers can pause in their favorite places to explore and discover the hidden bits of humor (what do robots eat for lunch? WD-30 soup and hot gear stacks!).

Readers familiar with Weisner's other works will recognize the feel of "Flotsam" in this app, of focusing in on a tiny detail and discovering something new. Like every one of the Caldecott-winning artist's creations, Spot cannot fail to please. And all e-book readers will realize, yes! This is exactly what e-books are capable of being! Not simply a translation of paper onto a screen, but an entirely new medium allowing for a dimensionality and a depth that a mere picture book cannot manage. Parents should sit down with their children and let the young ones lead the way through this app, telling the stories in their own words and with their own sense of wonder.
