Heather Has Two Mommies
Spring 2015 Picture BooksLesléa Newman's landmark picture book about a little girl and her same-sex parents stirred up loud controversy when it was first published. Twenty-five years later, it is the sweet-natured celebration of inclusion and family in all its configurations (two moms, a mom and dad, two dads, one dad, one mom, grandparents, step-parents, brothers, sisters, etc.) that resonates. (In interviews, Newman has pointed out that the most subtle-and hard to see-change is that Heather's moms are now wearing wedding rings.) The reassuring text of this updated and revised version paints a picture of a happy child's everyday life at home and at school; new illustrations by Laura Cornell give the book a sunny glow.
