In March, the weather is rainy and gloomy. Allie is staring out the window at the rain when Mama bursts into the room, demanding that she and her grandmother put on their boots and raincoats and come with her to see a surprise. Grandma is a grumpy companion, but Allie jumps right into the spirit of adventure. With some prompting, she begins to notice the rainbow of colors produced by oil swirling in a puddle, and the earthworm inching across the sidewalk. Finally, arriving at the surprise, they see a river of toads trying to cross a normally busy street. The police have stopped traffic, and a crowd of people are picking up toads and carrying them over the pavement.

Toad Weather is based on a true story of the annual toad migration in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The illustrations by Thomas Gonzalez are created with pencil and pastels. The fine line, realistic characters and their bright colors spill across double-page spreads set against the evening darkness. The multitude of toads is a cheerful delight.
