Ladybug is Cricket Media's literary magazine for preschool children, as distinct from their science- and history-themed magazines. Of course, the advantage of a literary magazine is that stories, poems, and artwork can be written about anything-and Ladybug's contents, accordingly, cover topics from dinosaurs (a perennial favorite) to Lunar New Year to Ghanaian kente cloth to the infamous Opposite Monster who gets children in trouble. Brief, readable, and often funny poems are often in greater quantities than stories, so that children who love rhymes get plenty, but children who prefer longer story arcs may want more. Ladybug offers other regularly featured activities, as well; each issue opens with an "I Spy" activity, so that children can hunt for objects in a picture; each issue publishes a children's song, complete with musical notes and an online recording for parents who don't read music; and each issue contains a well-designed craft activity connected to one of the stories in the issue. Ladybug incorporates a range of illustration styles, providing a variety of artwork, and it assumes a diverse readership. Ladybug is beautifully constructed and well written for its target age group as each issue contains more than enough material to keep a range of children happy.
