Never losing sight of its target audience, Cobblestone gives readers a sense of the country's societal, political and cultural changes, and its global and domestic struggles. A magazine for young people devoted to American history may seem like an uphill climb, but between the colorful covers of this glossy publication, the American story, its historic figures and events-from colonial times on-come to life. The February 2014 issue, entitled, "Unsung Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement," is an example of what the magazine does best. Profiling many of the men and women who were key to the civil rights struggle, it included a host of those whose names, unlike Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Congressman John Lewis and other less known but nonetheless iconic figures. A timeline from 1896 to 1965 offered eye-opening context; included, too, was a feature about leaders in the fight for rights in other countries. Historians, authors and educators serve as the magazine's consulting editors; regular features offer ample opportunity for readers to participate, research and create.
