Bubble Guppies
Spring 2015 TelevisionBubble Guppies a CGI-animated half-hour program for preschoolers, follows the adventures of a young group of mermaids and mer-men as they learn life lessons in the underwater world of Bubbletucky.
These cheerful little creatures usually start their day en route to the Bubbly Guppy preschool. Although the cast includes many Bubble Guppies, the main characters are pals Molly and Gil. Their observations about their neighborhood spark questions that they then pose to their teacher, a fish named Mr. Grouper, and his answers usually require a field trip for more exploration of the subject.
In the episode "Bubble Scrubbies," Bubbletucky residents suffer from a cold bug and Mr. Grouper explains how practicing good hygiene prevents germs from being passed around. From washing hands with soap to covering your mouth when you sneeze to using tissues and hand-sanitizers, little viewers learn the strategies necessary to keep germs from spreading. In "Swimtastic Check-up," the mayor is in training for a marathon but health issues require a medical check-up, sparking a lesson about basic body parts and how they function. And in "Come to Your Senses," little Nonny breaks his glasses and the Bubble Guppies learn how all of our senses work to interpret the world. Characters often pose questions and quizzes and allow time for little viewers to consider the answers; and themes are reinforced by appropriately bubbly music breaks with song lyrics geared to the show topic.
Bubble Guppies is formulaic and not wildly different from many other children's programs that teach character development and educational concepts, but the topics are always appropriate for pre-schoolers and the educational content is straight-forward and well-organized. Add to that the fact that it's delivered in such a merry, friendly format that little viewers are likely to gobble up all that these guppies have to offer.
