Who made the first drawing ever? The 1994 discovery in France of cave drawings and a child's footprint dating back more than 30,000 years was the springboard for author-illustrator Mordicai Gerstein's book imagining the very first artist: a child, living at the time of the woolly mammoth. The boy's disapproving clan calls him the "Child Who Sees What Isn't There," alarmed that he claims to see the shapes of animals in the clouds, in stones and on cave walls, and that he runs with the animals in his dreams. Finally, yearning to share what he sees, the boy finds inspiration in the charcoal end of a burnt stick and a cave wall that he can fill with what he envisions. Gerstein, a Caldecott Medalist, conveys the excitement of seeing an idea made manifest on a cave wall and on paper, too, and his acrylic, pen-and-ink and colored pencil illustrations evoke the same stirring sense of discovery.
