Failure is good? A resounding "yes!" That's the answer in this inspiring book in rhyme by Andrea Beaty ("Iggy Peck, Architect") about budding inventor Rosie Revere, who discovers that failure is where learning happens. Shy second-grader Rosie loves inventing "gadgets and gizmos," but when her uncle, Zookeeper Fred, guffaws at an invention she creates just for him, Rosie is crushed. A visit from great-great Aunt Rose, who once worked as an airplane builder, encourages Rosie to build a "cheese-copter" that turns out to be more flop than flight. (Artist David Roberts' whimsical pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations, incorporating graph paper and notes about real-life women inventors, are marvelously detailed.) Aunt Rose encourages her niece to see the result in a different light: "Life might have its failures, but this was not it./ The only failure can come if you quit." In the end, that wisdom is picked up by Rosie's classmates, too, who embrace each of their "perfect failures" as a creative stepping-stone.
