Dr. Dessert, The Science of Sweets and Treats, includes 6 dessert recipe cards that are composed to explain how science relates to each recipe. While the user supplies the ingredients and equipment, the kit supplies the recipe idea and the science principles. For the other experiments the kit supplies: 2 plastic cups (small thin clear party cup), a small blue scoop, 3 plastic, disposable cups w/ one lid, tiny plastic volcano, a ring pop ring (without the pop), a wooden skewer, a single pipe cleaner, a baggy of borax powder, a baggy of epsom salt, a tiny polymer dolphin, a baggy of salt , 5 pH strips, snow powder (sodium polyacrylate), and small polymer spheres. These are used in different Discovery activity sets dedicated to exploring science principles.

While this product says it requires adult supervision, it really requires adult participation: to purchase and assemble necessary items, help with handling potentially harmful ingredients, and help with understanding the instructions and the science connection. Our 8-year-old tester is a terrific reader, but she needed Mom to explain what the directions were asking her to actually do, and to discuss what happened and what was cool about it . This is not necessarily a bad thing. The parent and child collaboration makes Dr. Dessert a fun family project kit centered around motivational fun topic. This kit turned rainy baking day into a lot more interesting experience for everyone.

The Dr. Dessert kit involves the whole family in everyday science, and kids were all proud of their edible creations. Considering the price of the kit, we thought that the kit should include more materials and more kid-friendly instructions. Still, everyone enjoyed performing the adult-lead science experiments detailed by the directions.
