"Get Outdoors!" By Jeff and Paige

Fall 2013 Music
Ages: 2 - 9 yrs.
CD Price: $15.00

Get Outdoors is Jeff Kagan (music and lyrics) and Paige Doughty's (storyline) second CD to promote science and nature through a series of songs and accompanying skits. Jeff and Paige have good voices, and strike a nice balance between childlike silliness (which is occasionally preposterously perky), and solid educational content. The science-based subject matter introduces listeners to bats in "Bats (Oh Baby)," lovely birdsong in "Meadowlark," cleaning up after dogs in "Scoopa-Doop-Poop," and bicycle safety in "Share the Road." Elsewhere, there are some fun lessons on insect anatomy in "A Conversation Between an Entomologist and an Insect," forest ecology embodied in the witty love song "Rosa & Douglas," and a sad tale of beetle infestation in "Rise & Fall." The duo even explains plate tectonics in "Tectonic Throwdown," crosswalk safety ("Other Side of the Road") and the general appreciation of the natural world ("In Love With Nature"). The songs are presented in mostly acoustic settings, with guitar and mandolin being the prime instruments.

The CD, of course, comes in eco-friendly packaging, though surprisingly, lyrics are not included either with the CD or on their website. This is particularly disappointing as their clever lyrics and storylines convey complex concepts, which many adults may need a refresher course to explain. Or better yet, schools can book the duo for assemblies of well-crafted music, story, and fun-filled learning.
