Joss, the narrator of Wendy Mass' Pi in the Sky, is the seventh son of the Supreme Overlord of the Universe. You would think that would make his life pretty easy, but it turns out that not even all-powerful, immortal beings are immune to adolescent woes. Joss struggles to find anything special about himself in comparison to his older brothers, all of whom spend their time in high-profile jobs like managing the afterlife of beings from every planet, orchestrating the creation of new species, and recording life forms from, well, everywhere. Meanwhile, Joss is the one who delivers pies, which are really packets of energy and matter used to spark new galactic bodies. The job doesn't tax Joss much, and he spends most of his time going to school or goofing off with his best friend, Kal.

Things change when Earth, the planet that Joss' immortal peers most enjoy watching, is ripped from the space time continuum. Only Annika, an almost-thirteen-year-old girl from the United States survives. With Earth were taken Kal's parents and, as a result, Kal goes missing too. Though not sure just how he will do it, Joss sets himself to bringing Earth back from oblivion. In the process, he'll discover the talents that make him unique, ones that he'll have to use in order to rescue Earth and return Annika to her home.

Quotes from curious minds like Ray Bradbury, Richard P. Feynman, and Neil deGrasse Tyson set the tone for each chapter of this funny book filled with deep thoughts. One of these quotes comes from writer Eden Phillpotts, who said, "The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper." Pi in the Sky will suggest some of these magical things to young readers, and will encourage them to pursue and study them further.
