Mama Duck's trip to town with her ducklings (Pippin, Bippin, Tippin, Dippin, and Little Joe) begins in a perfectly ordinary way, with a walk through the park and a little snack from some overflowing waste baskets. But when Mama leads her brood off the street curb and marches across a grate with her wide feet, she doesn't immediately realize that her small ducklings, obediently waddling after her, are falling one by one through the bars into the storm drain below. Fortunately, someone sees the ducklings' accident and calls the fire department. The firemen, and Mama Duck, encounter one obstacle after another in rescuing the hapless babies. At each new twist, the narrator reassures the reader, "That could have been the end of the story. But it wasn't, because..." Needless to say, the real end of the story only arrives when the ducklings are safely restored to Mama.

It will very likely be impossible for any adult to read this book with (or without) a child and not immediately think of Robert McCloskey's classic Make Way for Ducklings. This new picture book recalls the delight of that other wonderful encounter between ducklings and uniformed public servants, but its story and narrative style are entirely its own. Based on a true duckling rescue story from Montauk, Long Island, Lucky Ducklings employs clever repetition especially suited for reading aloud, and expressive illustrations that are both beautifully drawn and funny. If Make Way for Ducklings is already on your child's bookshelf, make room for Lucky Ducklings right next to it.
