Review:

Rain or shine, children can garden with Garden Dice, a virtual gardening game for two to four players ages ten years and up. The game includes fifty two-sided seed/vegetable tiles, four bird/rabbit tiles, four sundial/scarecrow tiles, four wooden dice, thirty-six wooden disks for marking players' tiles on the board, four sun tokens, and two rock tiles. It also includes four sturdy rule reminder cards that players can keep with them for easy access to game instructions and rules.

Children play as gardeners and use dice to buy, plant, water, and harvest their plants; they can also move hungry birds and rabbits around the garden to eat their opponents' crops. For parents who prefer a "friendlier" version, the bird and rabbit tiles can be removed from the game.

At first, the directions seem a little overwhelming, but after a second read-through and actually playing the game, they become clearer. That the game mirrors the actual practice of growing and harvesting plants makes the rules somewhat intuitive, also.

Garden Dice is a wholesome and entertaining game that can encourage sequencing, following of rules, and good sportsmanship. Repeat play is rewarded, and as children internalize the rules, they will be able to focus on strategy during the game.
