Veteran children's music singer-songwriter Ben Rudnick and his talented musician friends fuel pop-style songs with signature warmth and a variety of vocal layers and instrumental rhythms. An island beat runs through "Where Are the Dragons," jumping thoughtfully from the absence of mythical beasts to concern about at-risk species in the real world. In the lively "Chicken Soup Ballad," veggies nearly past their prime and languishing in a refrigerator, "come out of the cold" under the guidance of a most agreeable chicken to find new purpose in a warming pot of soup. "My Horse" tickles with a country fiddle twang and witty lyrics, while "Wake Up Happy" is a new-day celebration gently wrapped in 1960s-style harmonies. The fine rendition of George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun" and the traditional "Jennie Jenkins" that close out the album are a good fit with its deft, child-friendly retro feel.
