Zayde Comes to Live
Fall 2012 Picture BooksLosing a beloved grandparent is the subject of Sheri Sinykin's sensitive and moving new picture book, Zayde Comes to Live. In the story, a young girl senses that her grandfather is dying, based on what he can't do anymore: run in the yard, toss a ball, play hide-and-seek. Naturally, the child has questions about what will happen to Zayde when he dies, and she asks her rabbi for guidance. Sinykin's story provides some answers from a traditional Jewish point of view. But even those from outside the faith can take comfort in the relationship between Zayde and his grandchild, "breathing in, breathing out, together," and making memories.
