This gentle picture book, by award-winning writer Crescent Dragonwagon, is a wonderful way to send a child to sleep. In All the Awake Animals Are Almost Asleep, Dragonwagon uses poetic imagery and lyrical lines to create an alphabet book that pays close attention to the sounds in language. She writes: "Fox, fading fast, / finds rest in the forest," while a snake slithers "toward a sweet, slumberous snooze." The emphasis on alliteration benefits young children's language development, while also providing the story with a soothing sense of rhythm. David McPhail's watercolor-and-ink illustrations are a lovely complement to the text. This is an excellent choice for bedtime reading, or for introducing children to the joy of words.
