The Monkey Bunch are singers Shoshana Sperling and Maury LaFoy, amply backed by Graham Powell, Lyle Molzan and other guest musicians. Power to the Little People is their second album for children, and it is a barrel of eclectic fun. Taking a vaguely dance hall approach, reminiscent of both the Beatles' (who they cover), and Gilbert and Sullivan, Sperling and LaFoy base much of what they do on cleverly rewriting lyrics by everyone from The Monkees and Prince, to The Who. There are unusual covers versions of songs such as Lennon and McCartney's "You Mother Should Know," John Entwistle's Boris the Spider," as well as an alphabet song originally sung by the diminutive Prince Rogers Nelson. Parents will immediately click with the tributes in the "Mommy Medley," which substitutes the word "mommy" for "money" in several famous tunes, such as "Money (Mommy) Makes The World Go Round" from the musical Cabaret, Pink Floyd's "Money (Mommy)," and the Beatles "Money (Mommy), That's What I Want." A funny, but perhaps politically incorrect, John Lennon imitation at the end only mars the song slightly. Not to be missed are the side-splitting Latin rave up song "Poopie Diaper," or the techno-rocker "Stroller Patrol." The band's solely original tunes such as the Andrew Sisters-like "Baby Are You Sleeping Now," "The Shakey Shake" and the lovely acoustic "The Stream," are all standouts. Sure, perhaps they use too many silly voices, and occasionally over-the-top ethnic accents, but it is all in good fun, and the songs/parodies are all skillfully constructed.
