As a mother of two young artistic boys, this app had instant appeal. As a graphic designer, it just kept getting better.

Draw & Tell is Duck, Duck Moose's first venture into drawing with an easy-to-use app that lets children create their own drawings from scratch or color in pre-designed coloring pages. If children opt to create a drawing from scratch, they can choose from a wide variety of background papers or even images/photographs from their Photos folder. Once a paper is selected, there are a multitude of tools primed for their creative venture. Stamps of familiar Duck, Duck Moose characters along with other creatures, letters, numbers, vehicles, accessories for the animals and scrapbook-like objects can be placed on the screen and resized. A colorful assortment of patterns can be used to draw free-form shapes or to fill in shapes on the coloring pages. As with most drawing programs, standard tools such as a large and small eraser, a paint brush, colored pencil and crayon are also included; each with a large assortment of colors. There is also a stencil tool that includes a number of fun shapes and silhouettes that can be colored. Additionally, soft children's music plays in the background while they work.

Aside from the ease of use and quality of the design elements, what sets this app apart is that the children can record a message with their pictures. As a parent, I found this feature particularly appealing because our testers, young and old, used the recording feature to discuss something special about their picture, the action or scene that they had drawn, or in some cases, the thought process that went into creating their drawing. As parents, we are often very pre-occupied when children are telling us about things, so having their young voices recorded to listen to later, was a real treat and something to treasure.

There are a couple of enhanced drawing tools that I would like to see included in the app, such as the ability to delete objects without having to undo the last action or the ability to move objects forward or back. But just as it is, the app is perfect for young artists. The graphic elements included also make a fun app for parents to play with their creativity as well. Signs, party invitations and all kinds of personalized graphics could easily - and beautifully - be created with this tool.
