Creative Kids is a little like The New Yorker for the 8 to 16 set. It's a literary journal run by an editorial board made up of readers who apply for two-year positions and commit to regular contributions. All of its content is creative, and all comes from readers, it's truly, as it says, a magazine by kids and for them.

The journal is quarterly and packed with writing. The fiction ranges from fantasy to fable to satire, in both long and shorter forms. There's also poetry, do-it-yourself arts and craft projects, book reviews, author interviews, persuasive essays and even science reports; again all coming from readers. Bylines are prominent and include age, hometown, and often a photo. There's original artwork, too, from comic strips to portrait to photography and paintings in all different mediums. In short, there's something for everyone.

That said, because of the wide age range of contributors and range of personal artistic tastes of its readers, there's also content readers may not find interesting. Kids will pick and choose what they read or view, but whether something captivates them or not, Creative Kids gives them great exposure to creative output by their peers. It's the sort of magazine that might inspire slightly more than it engages. But the inspiration is great, and it's a wonderful way to encourage the creative spark in any child.
