At the Sea Floor Café
Spring 2011 PoetryDeep in the ocean, a "patient reef shark waits / a cleaner wrasse dances in", and a "fair violet snail" floats "on bubbled mucus gel." These are just some of the marine creatures Leslie Bulion readers meet At the Sea Floor Café. The book consists of 18 poems about sea life (such as the coconut octopus, snapping shrimp, and broody squid), each one accompanied by scientific facts. Light and humorous overall, the collection employs a variety of poetic techniques and forms. "Hidden in Plain Sight" is a pantoum and "Watch the Toes" is an epigram, while "Krill Power" is written in free verse. In addition to a bibliography and a glossary of scientific terms, Bulion includes a section called "Poetry Notes" where she discusses the techniques used in each of the poems. Leslie Evans’ hand-colored block prints are a striking complement to the text.
