The TeenNick HALO Awards 2010

Spring 2011 Television
Ages: 15 - 16 yrs.
Producer: Nickelodeon
Network: Nickelodeon

It's refreshing to see an awards show devoted to teens who are working to help others. Nick Cannon is the host of the TeenNick HALO Awards. HALO stands for Helping and Leading Others.

Cannon surprises teens in their hometowns with the news that they've won an award. He rolls out a red carpet and he stands at a little podium as their friends, family, classmates or whoever may have helped play a part in their win watch. A taped segment then explains why the teen is being recognized.

In this year's awards, a teen in South Florida was cited for his use of social media to help relay information about families during the Haiti earthquake, a young woman who grew up in foster care was recognized for her mentoring program involving foster care kids, a teen who was fighting to end slavery around the world and another teen started a beauty pageant for girls with disabilities to help boost their confidence.

Cannon gives award winners $10,000 each for their program and $10,000 each to help pay for college. But it doesn't end there. Cannon then brings in a celebrity guest to help add a special surprise. This year's winners were treated to visits with Wyclef Jean, Mariah Carey, Ashton Kutcher and Rosario Dawson.

Cannon is a lively host who sets just a fun tone, taking charge in each situation and making the award-winner feel special. And because the celebrities here aren't getting the awards - they're giving them - the show sends a message that helping others is what will really make you shine.
