Team Umizoomi
Spring 2011 TelevisionWhen you watch Team Umizoomi for the first time, it will feel familiar. It seems to have borrowed heavily from shows that came before it. The show is equal parts Dora the Explorer, Super Why, and Wonder Pets. Fortunately, it borrowed from some of the best parts of those shows.
Like Wonder Pets, someone needs help and that sets the team off on an adventure (parts of the adventure even look semi-realistic like Wonder Pets). The team interacts with their audience via on-screen prompts and highlights, as in Dora the Explorer. Like Super Why, the adventures are tied to the curriculum, though in Team Umizoomi the curriculum is math.
The math curriculum is rich and varied, going well beyond counting to geometry, measurement, and patterns. The math moments in the show offer nice explanation and clarity to some of the math concepts.
Team Umizoomi has electric animation and is loaded with excellent, catchy music. Much of it is right on target for three to four-year-olds, and it offers a nice introduction to math concepts for preschoolers.
