As favorite uncles go, Nigel is a doozie. When he invites his nephew Peter to join him on an expedition to Africa, Peter accepts without hesitation. First they set off through the jungle to see the Zimbobo Mountain Gorilla. But the vegetation proves to be too thick for Peter to navigate. When Peter cries out that he can't get through, Uncle Nigel cheerfully replies "Nonsense, my boy! All it takes is a bit of gumption." and forges ahead, hacking his way through with his hunting knife.

The obstacles along Peter's journey are made easier not by gumption, but by an array of exotic animals that the one-track-mind Uncle Nigel never observes. The characters are large, broadly outlined and absurdly funny. Egielski's skilled and engaging illustrations carry Peter (quite literally) and carry the delightful and comic story.
