A highway sign announcing impending road construction strikes dread in the hearts of drivers. But for many young children it's something to be truly excited about. The mammoth yellow diggers, bulldozers and front-end loaders that are so much a part of the landscape during road work have a great deal of appeal for little ones; traffic slowdowns just make it easier to get a good look at the machines. Sally Sutton taps into this inherent interest in her new picture book, Roadwork. Besides highlighting the equipment used in road projects, Sutton also traces one project from beginning to end, putting it into perspective for her young audience. A helpful glossary of "machine facts" tells more about the vehicles used. Brian LovelockĀ¹s ink illustrations are appropriately colorful, rich with safety yellow and blue skies. Furthermore, it's nice to see that several of LovelockĀ¹s racially diverse construction workers are female. This book is made for reading--and rereading--with truck-loving preschoolers.
