Spelling City

Fall 2008 Website
Ages: 5 - 18 yrs.
Developer: John Edelson
Producer: Vkidz
How do you spell fun and educational? Spelling City actually manages to make practicing for a spelling test fun by letting users type in their own list of up to 10 words or user one of the many sample lists, which are broken out by grade (K-8) and themes. The site offers eight spelling and vocabulary games to complement the spelling list. After taking the online spelling test, students can print out a report, retake the entire test, or get tested only on spelling words that they misspelled on the first round. The site’s TeachMe function spells and displays the word in ways that stimulate memory for visual and verbal learners. For added fun and offline learning, Spelling City also offers Printable Games including WordSearch, UnScramble, WhichWord? and MissingLetter.

Teachers can register online (it’s free) and access the site’s List Management service to post lists weekly or for the entire year, and can even add a link to their lists from their school or class Web site.

Best of all, the site features a real, human-sounding female voice, making the testing less intimidating and the learning more engaging.
