With two artists as parents, one preoccupied, and the other essentially absent at his studio in London, the four Casson family siblings are cast on their own resources. The youngest members of the colorful (literally and figuratively) Casson family, twelve year old Indigo and his eight-year-old sister Rose, are close allies. Because he has been seriously ill and out of school, Indigo has had a long reprieve from being bullied by his classmates. When Rose accidentally indicates that Indigo is now enough to return to school, she fears that the bullying will pick up where it left off. But this time, after retaliation by their older sister Saffron and her tough, wheelchair- bound friend, Sarah, the gang instead turns on the new boy, Tom from America. Gradually, the oppressed boys form a tentative bond. However, when Rose meets Tom, her enthusiasm is anything but tentative.

Independent, funny, and caring, Indigo and his sisters hassle and help each other with a great deal of concern and affection.
