Though the writing style leans toward a basic recital of facts, it is those facts alone that will generate interest. The author has clearly done her homework, searching through public and personal documents of all types, to portray the lives of girls in American history. Quotes from primary sources include jump rope rhymes and diary entries, poems and letters. Text is nicely broken up with documents, drawings and photos. Young readers will gain a better understanding of the big picture in women’s history, but it is the small “pictures” of individual children and their private thoughts and dreams that they will relish and that truly recommend this book.
