Ratchet loves her selfish mother but receives little in return. Without warning or luggage of any sort, Ratchet’s mother ships her to Maine to spend the summer with two elderly relatives. Tilly and Penpen are unidentical twins who are tremendously eccentric; they are also kind and generous. A laugh-aloud, farcical story evolves from this unlikely premise. The author's humor skirts well beyond the probable and barely within the possible.

The ending is unusually satisfying. There is no abrupt denouement but a gradual, kindly winding down of events in the lives of the likeable characters. A peek into their long-range futures is thoroughly gratifying.
